CAMPING AGAIN
If someone told me at this point in my
life that I would still be "able" to go camping, I would not
have believed them. But I did just that! I was actually a counselor with
the Recreation Council at Babler State Park in St. Louis County. It was a
camp in which both staff and campers had disabilities. The kids took part
in horse back riding, fishing, hiking, archery, sports, arts & crafts,
and campfires. My wheels got quite a workout.
The entire camp was fully accessible to
people with disabilities. Sue Fleming, the Executive Director of the
Recreation Council, acted as my attendant. Sue could transfer me in and
out of my wheelchair with ease and learned how to do my cath. It was
wonderful to see children helping each other in an all-inclusive setting.
I so wish this could happen throughout the world, and in time perhaps it
will be.
